Among the household items, you probably use your mattress the most – for about the third of your daily life to be exact. The best you could do is keeping it clean and free from dust, hidden bacteria, stain, and odor, by cleaning it from time to time.

It is critical to keep your mattress from spills and dust every day to prevent the buildup of germs and bacteria that might cause your skin to irritate.

You need to clean your mattress when:

  • You haven’t cleaned it for 6 six
  • Your mattress started having an odor
  • You’ve noticed some strange bites on your skin
  • You’ve noticed allergy symptoms on your skin

Good thing cleaning a mattress isn’t as difficult as you thought. We’ve rounded up the easiest way to clean your mattress so you could clean your mattress conveniently using the most basic household tools and materials available from your local store.

  1. Remove and Wash Linens

Remove and wash all linens you use on your bed. Use the hottest setting when washing and drying for linens with colors that will not bleed to free them from germs, bacteria, and parasites.

  1. Remove the dust

The quickest way to free your mattress from the dust is to use a vacuum cleaner. Do a double-take to make sure it’s free from dust, and then use a crevice tool when vacuuming the edges of your mattress.

  1. Steam Clean (Optional)

Use a garment steamer and hold the nozzle as close as possible to the mattress to eliminate unwanted parasites in the mattress. Make sure to go over the mattress, and then vacuum again to remove the parasites.

  1. Take out stains (if there’s any)

Do you eat snacks while watching your favorite series on a bed? Do you have a cat that likes to cuddle with you on your bed? You may want to check out stains as often as possible to free your mattress from stains easily. News stains are easy to wipe away than the old ones.

If you have a steam cleaner available then by all means use it to wipe away the stains easily, and use it to clean your mattress too. If not, look for a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution from your local drugstores, and pour it on the stained area. Let it sit for 5 minutes, use absorbent material to clean and dry it.

  1. Sanitize and Deodorize

Once step 1 – 4 is done, it’s time to clean and give your mattress a fresh smell. Use a container to combine 4 cups of baking soda (absorbs moisture and kills germs), 20 drops of essential oil. Close and shake well, and then sprinkle it all over the mattress for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Once done, vacuum your mattress to remove the powder. You may add 4 tablespoons of borax (optional if your mattress has a strong odor).

  1. Repeat the process on the other side of the mattress

Flip the mattress on the other side and repeat what you did at step 1,2,3,4 and 5.

  1. Cover the mattress

You need to cover your mattress to minimize stains and spills reaching it. It also aids the mattress to absorb moisture and can be washed easily as often as possible. This can prevent unwanted parasites and bacteria from building up on your mattress.

Additional Recommendation

Flip and rotate your mattress (optional depending on the mattress) every 6 months to avoid sagging and to enjoy using it for a longer time.
